The Sindh High Court directed authorities to reinstate access to the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, ensuring uninterrupted service nationwide. The court emphasized the need for the platform’s restoration without any hindrance.
The petitioner’s lawyer highlighted a statement from the Minister of Interior, asserting that there was no official directive to close X. Using VPN, individuals conveyed that the platform was still accessible, countering claims of its closure.
Chief Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi questioned the authority responsible for shutting down and keeping sites closed. The lawyer clarified that only the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had the power to close X or manipulate its speed.
Expressing concerns over the impact on journalists and those dependent on X for their livelihoods, the lawyer stated that millions associated with media and research faced hardships. Access to vital information was impeded.
Justice Abbasi sought to determine the duration of X’s closure, referencing a previous order to open internet services. The lawyer clarified that this case was distinct, arising from the day Commissioner Rawalpindi admitted to manipulating X, causing distress for those reliant on the platform.
The Sindh High Court demanded a comprehensive response from the PTA and other involved parties in the upcoming hearing. Additionally, it restrained the PTA from arbitrarily shutting down internet services, websites, and social media platforms without a warrant. The immediate restoration of X’s services across the country was ordered.
