Elon Musk slams Google AI, accuses it of bias

In a scathing rebuke aimed at tech giant Google, Elon Musk, the maverick CEO of Tesla, took to social media platform X to launch a blistering attack.

Musk’s ire was directed towards Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives, particularly its chatbot Gemini, which recently faced criticism for its image generation feature being labeled as “woke” by some users.

Musk didn’t mince his words, asserting that Google had “overplayed their hand” with their AI image generation, thereby exposing what he termed as “insane racist, anti-civilizational programming.”

This critique comes in the wake of Google’s acknowledgment that Gemini had been offering inaccurate historical image depictions, prompting the company to temporarily halt the feature.

Despite Google’s assurances of working to rectify these inaccuracies promptly, Musk remained unconvinced. He took a direct swipe at Jack Krawczyk, Gemini’s product lead, attributing him as a significant contributor to what he perceives as Google’s AI being “racist & sexist.”

Moreover, Musk didn’t limit his criticism solely to Google’s AI endeavors. He also took aim at what he deems as flawed corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, a stance he has previously vocalized against other tech entities, including Sam Altman’s OpenAI.

In his characteristic style, Musk didn’t hold back, even alleging bias in Google search results, claiming that a query on his phone yielded “pro-censorship” as the top two choices.

While representatives for Google remained silent in response to Musk’s barrage of criticisms, his comments underscore the ongoing debate surrounding AI ethics and the responsibilities of tech companies in ensuring fair and unbiased algorithms.
