In a compelling speech delivered at the Investopia conference in Abu Dhabi, Hollywood actor Idris Elba expressed his belief that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) could become the next big thing in the world of cinema. Drawing parallels with Hollywood’s impact on the early 20th-century American economy, Elba highlighted the potential for the UAE to reshape global perceptions of the region through the creative industry.
Addressing over 3,000 attendees from 58 countries, including 500 top executives, and institutions managing assets worth over $500 billion, Elba encouraged investors to explore opportunities within the film industry’s creative economy. He emphasized the transformative power of the creative sector, not only in terms of economic growth but also in shaping cultural values.
Elba noted, “The UAE can really benefit from reframing the way the world views this region by using the creative economy while creating opportunities.” He urged investors to consider the vast potential within the film industry, citing examples like the Barbie movie by Mattel, which generated a staggering $1.5 billion in revenue and continues to thrive.
Acknowledging the risks associated with the film industry, Elba pointed out the rapid returns possible, stating, “Yes, you could lose your money very quickly, but you can also triple or quadruple the money very quickly.”
Highlighting the expansive nature of the creative ecosystem, Elba stressed that the industry is not limited to actors and singers. He urged investors to consider the various layers, including legal and insurance opportunities, fashion, and equipment, forming a substantial and interconnected network.
