Nikki Haley, the former United States ambassador to the United Nations, secured a victory in the Washington, DC Republican primary, marking her first win in the nomination process. Haley clinched 62.9% of the votes, surpassing former US president Donald Trump, who received 33.2%, according to Reuters.
Campaign spokesperson Olivia Perez-Cubas commented on the outcome, stating that it’s not unexpected for those close to the Washington scene to reject Trump and his perceived chaos. Notably, Haley made history as the first woman to win a Republican primary in US history.
Despite this symbolic win, Haley faces challenging odds in winning the Republican nomination to go head-to-head with Democratic nominee President Joe Biden in November. Trump, who dominated the initial eight nominating contests, lost to Haley in Washington, DC. However, future polls suggest he is likely to secure victories in upcoming contests.
The demographics of Washington, DC, with a predominantly urban and college-educated population, differ from Trump’s rural and less-educated base. The city, often referred to by Trump as the “swamp,” is home to federal workers, whom Trump allies have pledged to replace if he wins in November. The Democratic primary in Washington is scheduled for June.
