In a recent meeting at the Prime Minister’s house in Islamabad, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir congratulated Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on assuming office as the country’s 24th chief executive. They discussed operational and security matters during their maiden meeting.
Prime Minister Shehbaz, who previously held the position from April 2022 to August 2023, secured his victory in a parliamentary session, receiving 201 votes against his opponent Omar Ayub Khan, who got 92 votes. Shehbaz had the support of seven other parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan.
Earlier, during the 263rd Corps Commanders’ Conference at Rawalpindi’s General Headquarters, the army expressed dismay over allegations of interference in the electoral process. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) clarified that the armed forces had no involvement in the electoral process.
The military emphasized the importance of following due legal processes with evidence instead of resorting to baseless political rhetoric. The corps commanders expressed satisfaction with the smooth democratic transition and hoped for political and economic stability in post-election Pakistan.
