In an unusual case in Germany, a man claimed to have taken a whopping 217 COVID-19 shots, sparking curiosity among researchers about the impact on his immune system. Scientists from Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nurnberg (FAU) investigated the situation and found that the man’s immune system was working perfectly.
Over 60 million people in Germany have received the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, but this individual stood out with his extraordinary number of shots. The researchers, led by Kilian Schober, reached out to him after hearing about his case in the news and conducted various tests in the city of Erlangen.
The study aimed to understand how frequent exposure to vaccine antigens might affect the immune system. While some experts worry that immune cells could become less effective over time, the research on this man provided reassuring results.
According to Katharina Kocher, one of the study’s authors, the man’s immune response was robust, with no signs of fatigue in T-effector cells, which defend against the virus. The number of memory cells, crucial for a strong immune response, was also found to be high. The study, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, suggests that, at least in this unique case, hyper-vaccination did not weaken the immune response; instead, it appeared to be quite the opposite.
