Pakistan has surged to the 9th spot among the world’s top potato producers, boasting a staggering production of over 8 million tons. This impressive achievement is credited to expanded cultivation areas and enhanced farming techniques, leading to a remarkable 35% improvement in potato production over the past three years.
While China leads the global charts with a whopping 95.6 million tons, Pakistan now stands proudly at 9th place, surpassing nations like France and the Netherlands. Potatoes have emerged as a major cash crop in Pakistan, ranking just behind wheat, rice, and maize. Despite this success, Pakistan’s average potato yield per hectare is still catching up to global standards.
Punjab takes the lead in contributing over 95% of the country’s potato production, fueled by a substantial increase in cultivation area. Although Pakistan has experienced a notable rise in potato export quantity, there’s been a dip in export value. Nevertheless, the country maintains a steady 3% annual growth rate in exports, with key destinations including Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, UAE, Russia, and Qatar. The potato story in Pakistan is not just about quantity but also reflects a dynamic shift in the agricultural landscape.
