US to welcome productive talks on Kashmir

In a recent press conference, Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the United States State Department, expressed the U.S.’s support for “productive and peaceful talks” between India and Pakistan regarding Kashmir. Miller highlighted that the timing is crucial as tensions persist between the two nations on various fronts. The statement comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated newly elected Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on assuming office.

During a press briefing, Miller stated, “The United States values its relationship with both India and Pakistan, and we want to see them have a productive and peaceful relationship.” He emphasized that the pace, scope, and character of any dialogue should be determined by India and Pakistan.

The U.S. has previously welcomed Shehbaz’s return as prime minister, expressing a commitment to working with the new Pakistani government on advancing shared interests. When questioned about human rights violations and corruption in Pakistan, Miller reiterated the U.S.’s call for respecting the human rights of all citizens, emphasizing the importance of a transparent and accountable government.
