President Joe Biden didn’t hold back in his State of the Union address, taking aim at his election rival Donald Trump. Without mentioning Trump by name, Biden criticized him 13 times as “my predecessor.” He accused Trump of bowing down to Russian President Vladimir Putin, questioned his commitment to NATO, and called him out on issues like abortion and the economy.
Biden, 81, framed the current challenges to freedom and democracy as unprecedented since the Civil War. He highlighted the US economy as the “greatest comeback story never told” and addressed issues like the war in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Despite Republican heckling, Biden delivered a vigorous performance, countering criticism about his age by joking about his experience. The State of the Union also served as a platform for Biden to pitch his reelection message to millions of viewers.
In response, Trump, 77, promised live commentary on his social media platform, Truth Social. However, technical glitches plagued the response, with intermittent crashes. Trump critiqued Biden’s appearance and demeanor, criticized his handling of the economy, and called the bipartisan border security bill a “disaster.”
The State of the Union marked a fiery exchange between the current and former presidents, setting the stage for what promises to be a heated election rematch in November.
