Newly elected Chief Minister of Baluchistan, Sarfraz Bugti, has called on Baloch insurgents to abandon violence and join mainstream politics. Bugti, who narrowly escaped several assassination attempts, expressed a forgiving attitude, stating, “I have forgiven all those elements as there is no flame of revenge in my heart.”
Bugti emphasized that being in power doesn’t mean settling personal scores. Despite losing relatives, friends, and colleagues in the conflict, he maintained, “I don’t have any revenge in my heart.” Bugti, who previously served as the caretaker interior minister, has always stood by the state in its fight against separatists.
The Chief Minister is now advocating for a resolution to the Balochistan insurgency through dialogue. He announced a “general amnesty” and a revival of a peaceful Balochistan policy, inviting insurgents to become part of mainstream politics.
However, Bugti warned that if insurgents don’t abandon violence and join the mainstream, the government would have no choice but to establish the writ of the state. He refrained from sharing specific details about the “general amnesty,” promising to elaborate once the policy is finalized.
Responding to concerns about missing persons, Bugti acknowledged the complexity of the issue. He mentioned a federal commission on missing persons that reportedly resolved 80% of cases. Despite the progress, he acknowledged, “I am not giving any justification as there is no justification even if a single person is missing.”
