Former US President and Republican contender for the White House, Donald Trump, has stirred controversy with remarks about various authoritarian leaders, including Adolf Hitler. Despite facing legal challenges with four criminal indictments, Trump remains in the spotlight for his comments on world leaders.
According to sources cited in a CNN report, Trump praised leaders like Viktor Orbán of Hungary, calling him “fantastic,” and described Xi Jinping of China as “brilliant.” He also expressed positive views on Kim Jong Un of North Korea, referring to him as “an OK guy.” These remarks were echoed during a Fox News town hall in July 2023, where Trump labeled Xi as “brilliant” and spoke favorably about Vladimir Putin, whom he considered smarter than President Joe Biden.
However, it was Trump’s alleged remarks about Adolf Hitler that raised alarm. Sources reported Trump saying that Hitler “did some good things,” particularly in rebuilding the German economy. Former Chief of Staff John Kelly recalled a conversation with Trump where he expressed disbelief at Trump’s comments, emphasizing Hitler’s atrocities and the devastation caused during World War II. Kelly highlighted Trump’s admiration for Hitler’s ability to maintain loyalty among his officers, contrasting it with his expectations of loyalty from his own generals.
In response to previous accusations of praising Hitler, a spokesperson for Trump in 2021 denied any such claims. Trump’s allies believe his presidency would lead to a shift in US policies towards NATO and other international commitments, including Ukraine.
