Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos of the New York State Assembly is set to introduce a resolution today that would designate Sindh and Punjab, two provinces of Pakistan, as sister states of New York. This move, scheduled strategically in the month of March to coincide with the historic Lahore Resolution of 1940, aims to strengthen the bonds between the American state and its counterparts in Pakistan.
The proposal, which is anticipated to pass with considerable support, comes after Deputy Speaker Ramos’s visit to Pakistan in November 2023. During his trip, Ramos engaged with various Pakistani officials and stakeholders, including Senator Ishaq Dar and caretaker ministers from Sindh and Punjab. The discussions centered around bolstering bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, healthcare, and education.
“I had the privilege of meeting with esteemed representatives from Pakistan during my visit last year,” stated Ramos. “The proposed resolution signifies our commitment to deepening ties with Sindh and Punjab, opening doors for mutual growth and prosperity.”
In anticipation of the resolution’s approval, plans are already underway for Ramos’s second visit to Pakistan in April. The objective of this visit will be to coordinate similar resolutions in the assemblies of Sindh and Punjab, formalizing the sister state status and laying the groundwork for collaborative ventures between the regions.
The resolution holds promise for fostering economic and cultural exchanges, as well as facilitating initiatives such as medical insurance for American Pakistanis in Pakistan.
