Arshad Nadeem, Pakistan’s star javelin thrower, who made headlines by winning a silver medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championship, was honored by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The meeting, held on Tuesday, saw the Prime Minister lauding Nadeem’s remarkable achievement despite facing challenges with limited resources.
During the gathering, Prime Minister Shehbaz announced a cash prize of Rs2.5 million in recognition of Nadeem’s accomplishment, emphasizing the immense talent present in Pakistan’s sports arena that needs nurturing, especially in rural areas.
Nadeem, in turn, shared insights about his sports journey, highlighting his participation in various world events since 2012 and his dedication to representing Pakistan on international platforms.
The meeting also discussed strategies to further promote sports in the country, with a focus on grassroots development.
Attendees included Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Minister of State for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Romeena Khurshid Alam MNA, and Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, a member of the Punjab Assembly.
Nadeem’s historic moment occurred on August 28, 2023, when he secured Pakistan’s first-ever medal at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary, with an impressive throw of 87.82 meters. Neeraj Chopra of India clinched the gold with a throw of 88.17 meters.
However, Nadeem faced setbacks following his achievement, notably missing out on the Asian Games due to a knee injury. He underwent successful surgeries for his elbow and knee, aiming for a comeback at the Paris 2024 Olympics scheduled for July.
