In a recent hearing at the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa addressed concerns regarding the conversion of agricultural land into commercial plots. The case under scrutiny involved the transfer of 2880 kanal land from the Revenue Employees Cooperative Housing Society to Bahria Town.
During the proceedings, Chief Justice Faiz Isa emphasized the state’s responsibility to protect agricultural land, noting that while societies invest in such land, it often remains out of reach for those in need of housing. He stressed the importance of ensuring that victims of such land conversions are fairly compensated, suggesting that they should receive plots of market value.
The court granted time for the involved parties to collaborate on finding a solution to address the grievances of the victims. Chief Justice Isa expressed concerns over the ambiguity surrounding the agreement for the merger of the cooperative society into Bahria Town.
Bahria Town’s lawyer assured the court of addressing the concerns raised by the victims, prompting Justice Irfan Saadat to emphasize the importance of providing alternative plots equal to market value, without mixing in luxury items like BMWs.
Despite objections from the lawyers representing Bahria Town and DHA, Chief Justice Isa directed for the proceedings to be conducted live, citing concerns over the influence wielded by powerful individuals involved in the case.
The Supreme Court adjourned the hearing until after Eid, indicating the seriousness with which it intends to address the issues surrounding the conversion of agricultural land into commercial plots.
