Star batter and former captain Babar Azam is reportedly being considered to lead the Pakistani cricket team once again, sources have disclosed to Geo News.
Sources close to Babar revealed that he may discuss the potential captaincy offer with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials before heading to the training camp in Abbottabad. However, they mentioned that Babar hasn’t made a firm decision yet and would address several concerns if he decides to accept the offer.
These speculations follow PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s recent remarks during a press conference where he stated that the selection committee would decide on the team’s captaincy.
Naqvi said, “Shaheen Shah Afridi will remain the captain or there would be a new skipper, this decision will be taken after deliberations.”
The discussions about Babar’s return as captain come after the team’s disappointing performances in the 2023 Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup, leading to Babar resigning from captaincy across all formats.
“After much thought, I have decided to step down as the captain of Pakistan in all formats. It’s a tough decision, but I believe it’s the right time,” Babar announced on social media.
Following his resignation, Shan Masood was appointed Test captain, while Shaheen Shah Afridi was given the responsibility of leading the T20 squad. However, the position of ODI captain remains vacant.
Recent reports also suggest that Shaheen Shah Afridi’s captaincy may be at risk due to his underwhelming performance in the Pakistan Super League season nine (PSL 9), ahead of the T20 World Cup scheduled for June.
