After years of anticipation, Zayn Malik, the former One Direction heartthrob turned solo artist, is set to release his latest album, “Room Under The Stairs.” In a heartfelt interview with L’Officiel, Zayn shared insights into his creative process, fatherhood, and the personal journey behind his forthcoming record.
From his rural Pennsylvania home, where he’s spent the past six years writing and recording independently, Zayn revealed the deeply personal nature of “Room Under The Stairs.” Departing from his previous works, this album features a raw and stripped-down acoustic sound, accompanied by confessional lyrics exploring love, parenthood, and existential questioning.
Zayn, now 31, shared, “When I get time to myself, I spend the majority of my time in the studio…That’s kind of how this album was created.” He also opened up about sharing his love for gardening with his three-year-old daughter, Khai, saying, “I get to share that experience with her because I’ve gotten a bit better at things. My crops are actually edible and usable.”
The album’s title, “Room Under The Stairs,” holds personal significance for Zayn, drawing inspiration from the horror comedy cult classic, “The People Under The Stairs.” Interestingly, Zayn revealed that he recorded most of the album in a shoe cupboard under the stairs, connecting his childhood fascination with the film to his current creative process.
Teaming up with Dave Cobb, Zayn found a kindred spirit who understood his music’s intention and helped bring his vision to life. Describing the collaboration as “pretty seamless,” Zayn expressed his admiration for Cobb’s musical genius.
Reflecting on his journey into parenthood, Zayn emphasized the influence of fatherhood and nature on his music. While his daughter Khai hasn’t visited the studio yet, Zayn shared her remarkable affinity for music, noting her ability to remember lyrics and chord progressions.
