In a move set to bolster governance and enhance efficiency, the Federal Cabinet has greenlit the appointment of Lieutenant General Muhammad Munir Afsar as Chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) for a promising three-year term.
The decision, reached during Friday’s Cabinet session, follows the initial appointment of Lt. Gen. Muhammad Munir Afsar by the caretaker government led by Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar on October 2. The appointment, initially temporary, has now been officially endorsed by the federal government for an extended tenure after thorough deliberations and considerations.
Sources within the government disclosed that the approval stemmed from a comprehensive summary circulated by the Ministry of Interior. Recognizing the critical need for robust governance structures, the Federal Cabinet additionally sanctioned the inclusion of Rule Seven A in the NADRA Rules 2020.
Rule Seven A, a notable addition to the regulatory framework governing NADRA, empowers the government to appoint any serving officer as Chairman of NADRA in the national interest. This move signifies a strategic step towards ensuring the effective management and security of vital national data.
The approval of Lt. Gen. Muhammad Munir Afsar’s appointment and the implementation of Rule Seven A underscores the government’s commitment to fostering efficiency and integrity within NADRA, a cornerstone institution responsible for managing citizen records and identity documentation nationwide.
