In a solemn address to the United Nations (UN) Disarmament Commission, Pakistan’s Ambassador Munir Akram has raised alarm over India’s burgeoning weapons acquisitions and aggressive military stance, cautioning that such actions pose a grave threat to regional peace in South Asia.
During a session of the UN’s subsidiary body, Ambassador Akram emphasized the significant deterioration in South Asia’s security landscape due to India’s extensive armament program. He lamented India’s adoption of war-fighting doctrines like “Cold Start” and “limited war under the nuclear overhang,” painting a grim picture of the volatile situation.
Pointing to India’s status as the world’s largest arms importer, Akram underscored the supply of nuclear, missile, and conventional weapons by its “strategic partners,” exacerbating tensions in the region. His remarks come in the wake of Pakistan’s Usman Jadoon assuming the chairmanship of the Disarmament Commission’s 2024 session.
Akram also highlighted the longstanding dispute over the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), condemning the suppression of Kashmiri rights and the escalation of hostilities between the two nations. He warned of the dire consequences of India’s sponsorship of terrorism against Pakistan and its refusal to engage in dialogue.
Expressing Pakistan’s commitment to regional security, Akram reiterated the nation’s proposal for a nuclear-weapon-free zone in South Asia. He lamented India’s unilateral nuclear weapons testing and urged the international community to address the escalating tensions before they lead to a catastrophic outcome.
