In a move that has intensified diplomatic tensions, China has renamed 30 locations in the disputed region of Arunachal Pradesh, asserting sovereignty over the area and sparking a sharp rebuke from India.
The renaming of the region to “Zingnan” by China comes amidst ongoing border disputes between the two neighboring countries. The recent inauguration of the strategic Silla Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi further exacerbated tensions.
India swiftly objected to China’s actions, prompting a diplomatic protest from Beijing. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin reiterated China’s claims over Arunachal Pradesh, denouncing Modi’s visit to the region as a violation of Chinese territory.
This latest development adds to the long-standing tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations, which have been strained since clashes erupted in Ladakh in 2020. Both sides have maintained a significant military presence along the border, heightening concerns over the potential for further escalation.
With the situation remaining precarious and no immediate resolution in sight, the dispute between China and India continues to pose a significant challenge to regional stability.
