Inter Miami star Lionel Messi might soon add a new title to his illustrious career – co-owner of his own football club. Reports from Euro Sport, citing The Sun, suggest that the Argentine maestro could join existing co-owner David Beckham in the ownership structure of Inter Miami.
Messi, 36, has been a transformative figure for Inter Miami since his arrival in Major League Soccer (MLS). With 16 goals in 19 appearances, the former Barcelona icon has made a significant impact, leading his team to their first-ever trophy, the Leagues Cup in 2023.
While Messi’s contributions on the field have been undeniable, reports indicate that he could play a pivotal role off the field as well. The Sun’s report suggests that Messi might exercise a clause in his contract allowing him to become a co-owner of Inter Miami alongside Beckham.
The report explains that Jorge Mas, the majority owner of Inter Miami who convinced Messi to join the club, also appointed Beckham as the club president. This move laid the groundwork for the potential partnership between Messi and Beckham in the ownership realm.
Notably, Messi’s contract reportedly includes a clause granting him the option to acquire ownership in the club without the need for a separate buy-in. This arrangement mirrors a similar one Beckham had when he joined LA Galaxy in 2007, where he also had the opportunity to become a co-owner of the club.
However, unlike Beckham, who had indirect ownership in LA Galaxy, Messi’s option would afford him direct ownership in Inter Miami, further cementing his ties to the club and the MLS.
As discussions around Messi’s potential ownership stake continue, fans eagerly await further developments that could see one of football’s greatest players become a key figure in shaping the future of Inter Miami.
