In a bid to bolster disaster preparedness and response capabilities, China has furnished Gwadar port with an early warning system aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of natural calamities such as catastrophic floods and torrential rains.
The cooperation between the China Meteorological Administration and the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) marks a significant stride in fortifying the capacity of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to manage emergencies stemming from major meteorological disasters, as part of the broader Belt and Road Initiative.
Moreover, the China Meteorological Administration is actively aiding the PMD in augmenting its institutional prowess to confront the evolving hydro-meteorological challenges.
The urgency of such measures is underscored by recent events, as Gwadar was recently declared a calamity-hit area in the aftermath of extensive rainfall last month. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally visited the city, which bore the brunt of severe storms just last week.
Reports indicate that approximately 3,100 houses in Gwadar and 2,500 in Jiwani were obliterated, with 95 houses completely demolished and nearly 200 livestock perishing.
Officials have disclosed that 355 individuals have been accommodated in government residences, while 800 others were rescued and relocated to the homes of relatives. Additionally, the Pakistan Army and Navy have established hospital camps to provide medical assistance to the affected populace.
