Sania Mirza opens up on life, motherhood, and resilience

In her first interview since parting ways with former Pakistan cricket team captain Shoaib Malik, former Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has shared profound insights on life, motherhood, and resilience.

The couple, who tied the knot in April 2010 and welcomed their first child in October 2018, confirmed their separation earlier, marking a significant chapter in both their lives. Malik’s subsequent marriage to actress Sana Javed in January 2024 added another dimension to the narrative.

Speaking to the British Broadcasting Corporation (Hindi), Mirza emphasized the significance of patience, understanding, and the support of loved ones during challenging phases. Reflecting on the lessons learned from motherhood, she underscored the inevitable necessity for patience, asserting, “There’s no other option when you become a mother. I’m happy for this change.”

Acknowledging the trials of public life, Mirza conveyed, “Everyone in the world can’t like you…you learn to deal with it.” She revealed a newfound emphasis on emotional control, expressing, “I used to be very emotional, but now I think before I react.”

The tennis star also addressed the prevalence of criticism on social media, opting not to perceive it as a personal attack but rather a part of the territory. “Patience comes with age,” she noted, “but especially when you become a mother, there’s no other option.”

Reflecting on the past decade, Mirza disclosed a transformation in her decision-making process, attributing it to a newfound sense of contemplation and emotional maturity. She stressed the importance of integrity and genuine companionship over material wealth and fame, advocating for a grounded approach to life.

“Money and name are not everything,” she affirmed. “Who stands by you in difficult times matters most. There should always be people who speak the truth.”

Drawing parallels between sports and life, Mirza offered a message of resilience, asserting, “Bad days don’t last forever. You try to improve things and move forward.”

In her candid interview, Sania Mirza encapsulated the essence of navigating life’s challenges with grace, resilience, and a steadfast focus on what truly matters.
