CEC Sikandar Raja takes briefing on EVMs in Brazil

A delegation from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Mr. Sikandar Sultan Raja, embarked on a significant three-day visit to Brazil. The purpose of the visit was to study Brazil’s electoral system and explore the utilization of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in elections.

Upon arrival, the delegation engaged in a series of meetings with heads of various departments of the Tribunal Superior Electoral, the apex electoral body of Brazil. These meetings were aimed at gaining insights into Brazil’s electoral processes and understanding the operational dynamics of EVMs.

Brazilian officials provided comprehensive briefings on their country’s electoral framework, emphasizing the use of EVMs and measures to ensure public confidence in the electoral process. Discussions also centered on strategies to combat disinformation during election phases, a pertinent issue in modern democracies.

A highlight of the visit was a demonstration of the practical application of EVMs, allowing the Pakistani delegation to observe firsthand their functionality and efficacy in elections. The delegation expressed keen interest in learning from Brazil’s experience and adapting relevant practices to enhance Pakistan’s electoral infrastructure.

Speaking on behalf of the ECP, a spokesman highlighted the primary objective of the visit, which was to assess the feasibility and reliability of EVMs for future elections in Pakistan. With many countries, including Brazil and India, incorporating EVMs into their electoral systems, Pakistan aims to leverage such technologies to streamline its voting process and ensure transparency.

The visit underscored Pakistan’s commitment to electoral reform and its aspiration to adopt best practices from around the world to uphold the integrity and fairness of its democratic processes.

This exchange between the Election Commission of Pakistan and Brazil’s electoral authorities marks a significant step towards enhancing electoral transparency and efficiency on a global scale.
