Google employees arrested after protest against collaboration with Israeli govt

A group of Google employees staged a high-profile protest within the premises of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian’s office, demanding an immediate cessation of the company’s collaboration with the Israeli government.

The protest, which lasted over eight hours, culminated in the arrest of several employees who refused to vacate the premises until their demands were met.

The protest, initiated by a faction of Google employees in California and New York, was fueled by the company’s involvement in a billion-dollar AI contract known as Project Nimbus, signed back in 2021. Daily Wire reported that the discontent among employees reached its peak over Google’s ties with the Israeli government.

The demonstrators, affiliated with the No Tech for Apartheid movement within Google, aired their grievances during a livestream on Twitch, branding their protest with the hashtag #notech4apartheid. Their demands included a complete severance of ties between Google and the Israeli military and government, citing ethical concerns and a purported “health and safety crisis” among workers.

As dusk descended, a company representative approached the protesters and informed them of their administrative leave status, urging them to leave the premises. However, the protesters stood firm, prompting law enforcement intervention. Police were called to the scene, resulting in the arrest of the protesting employees, marking a dramatic climax to the sit-in.

Emaan Haseem, a software engineer at Google and one of the protestors, expressed her reluctance to risk her job but emphasized the necessity of condemning Project Nimbus and any support for the Israeli government. Haseem revealed that numerous colleagues had resigned from Google due to concerns related to Project Nimbus, citing its adverse effects on mental health.

The protest shed light on the perception among Google employees that services provided by Project Nimbus are contributing to the use of AI in ongoing conflicts, particularly in Gaza, which some have described as the first AI-powered genocide.

The incident not only underscores the mounting dissent within Google but also raises profound questions regarding the ethical responsibilities of tech giants in global political and human rights issues. The protesting employees aimed to catalyze a shift within the company, urging it to reconsider its contractual obligations and the moral implications of its technological ventures.
