Modi govt faces backlash over handling of social media

In recent developments, the Modi government finds itself under intense scrutiny for its management of social media platforms, with allegations of censorship and stifling dissent emerging as focal points of criticism.

Prior to the election, the administration allegedly initiated a campaign targeting social media users, sparking concerns about freedom of expression in the digital realm.

Critics have pointed fingers at the government’s alleged efforts to muzzle voices critical of its policies and actions. Reports from Indian newspaper Bolta Hindustan suggest that the Minister of Information and Broadcasting issued orders without explanation or prior notice, raising questions about transparency and accountability.

National Knock, a media platform, reportedly received a threatening notice, amplifying worries about government overreach in controlling narratives.

Shambu Kumar Singh, CEO of National Dastak, openly condemned the Modi government, implying that their reporting on sensitive issues like India’s marginalized communities and caste system may have invited undue scrutiny.

The opposition Congress party has joined the chorus of disapproval, particularly condemning the ban of YouTube channels associated with the Election Commissioner of India. Congress argues that such actions undermine democratic processes and silence dissenting voices.

Criticism extends to the government’s record on internet access, with frequent shutdowns reported, including during the recent Sikh farmer protests. Critics allege these measures are aimed at restricting the flow of information and transparency.

Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the treatment of journalists, with accusations of false charges and infringements on press freedom.

Human rights organizations have echoed these concerns, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding fundamental rights and freedoms against what they perceive as unwarranted government actions.
