Record-breaking rainfall hits UAE: Dubai flooded, residents urged to stay indoors

In an unprecedented weather event, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) witnessed its highest levels of rainfall in 75 years, resulting in widespread flooding, particularly in Dubai. The deluge prompted authorities to issue a red alert, warning residents to remain vigilant as severe weather conditions persisted.

Despite the cessation of rain in the UAE states over the last eight hours, the government advised people to stay indoors for safety. Dubai’s leadership convened an emergency meeting with the crisis and disaster management team to implement immediate measures in response to the rain emergency.

Media reports revealed that Dubai experienced rainfall equivalent to two years’ worth in just a single day. Sanitary staff across the Gulf country scrambled to drain water from flooded roads, while efforts to clear accumulated water in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and other affected areas were underway.

Tragically, reports emerged of an Emirati citizen swept away in floodwaters in Ras Al Khaima. The region of Al Ain, known as ‘Khatm Al Shakla’, bore the brunt of the deluge, with an astonishing 254.8mm of rainfall recorded in less than 24 hours, according to meteorological authorities.

Throughout the night, thunderstorms and lightning strikes intensified the downpour, continuing into Wednesday. Forecasters warned of ongoing unstable weather patterns until Thursday, attributed to a prolonged “low surface pressure” system and two waves of turbulent weather sweeping across the UAE.

In response to the escalating weather conditions, the UAE government mandated remote work for its employees on Wednesday, extending to remote learning for private school students. Private sector companies were also encouraged to adopt remote work arrangements to prioritize employee safety.

The heavy rainfall significantly disrupted transportation services, causing delays, disruptions in public transit systems, and flight diversions at airports due to adverse weather conditions. Dubai International Airport (DXB) reported significant disruptions, with flights delayed, diverted, and impacted by displaced crew.

Meanwhile, neighboring Oman also grappled with heavy rains, resulting in 18 reported fatalities. Omani authorities instructed residents to work from home, as tram services were lost in floodwaters.

As the UAE grapples with the aftermath of the record-breaking rainfall, residents are advised to exercise caution, prepare for potential power outages, and remain patient amid ongoing recovery efforts.
