In anticipation of Earth Day 2024, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled plans for a comprehensive ‘No to Plastic’ campaign, aiming to tackle environmental degradation and health hazards associated with plastic pollution. The campaign, set to be observed at division and district levels across Punjab, will kick off on April 22 with a focus on raising awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic on both the environment and public health.
Senior Punjab Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, spearheading the initiative alongside Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, affirmed the government’s commitment to implementing eco-friendly measures across the province. Aurangzeb emphasized the urgent need to curb the production, distribution, and usage of plastic bags, citing the grave consequences of plastic pollution on human health and the environment.
Addressing concerns over the rising incidence of respiratory illnesses and environmental degradation caused by plastic waste, Aurangzeb underscored the importance of transitioning to alternative, sustainable materials such as cloth and paper bags. The campaign’s objectives include engaging various stakeholders, including shopkeepers, shopping malls, restaurants, and households, to embrace eco-friendly practices and support the ban on plastic bags.
Highlighting the June 5 deadline for the complete prohibition of plastic bags, Aurangzeb urged swift action from heads of institutions and deputy commissioners to enforce the ban effectively. Special emphasis will be placed on educating the public through lectures and workshops in educational institutions, aiming to foster a culture of environmental consciousness and responsible consumption.
Furthermore, a concerted effort will be made to leverage national and social media platforms to disseminate ‘No to Plastic’ messages and garner widespread support for the campaign. The Senior Minister of Punjab called upon the media to play a pivotal role in amplifying awareness and encouraging public participation in the drive towards a plastic-free Punjab.
In a collaborative effort to safeguard the environment and promote public health, Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman and all deputy commissioners participated in a meeting chaired by Maryam Aurangzeb via video link. The collective resolve to combat plastic pollution underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and the well-being of its citizens.
