Two Malaysian Navy helicopters collide mid-air during rehearsal

In a devastating incident, two Malaysian navy helicopters collided mid-air during a rehearsal for a military parade, resulting in the loss of all 10 crew members on board. The tragic event unfolded in the Malaysian town of Lumut, which houses a Royal Malaysian Navy base.

Footage captured from the scene and broadcasted on local media revealed one helicopter clipping the rotor of the other, leading to a catastrophic crash. The collision occurred at approximately 09:30 local time (02:30 BST), leaving no survivors.

Authorities swiftly responded to the scene, with the Royal Malaysian Navy confirming the grim outcome. “All victims were confirmed dead on site, and the remains were sent to the [Lumut] Military Hospital for identification,” stated the Navy. Additionally, a committee will be formed to investigate the cause of the tragic incident.

Details emerged indicating that one of the helicopters, identified as a HOM M503-3 carrying seven individuals, crashed onto a nearby running track. The second aircraft, a Fennec M502-6 with three crew members, tragically crashed into a swimming pool in close proximity.

The state’s fire and rescue department received the alert at 09:50 local time (01:50 GMT), initiating emergency response efforts.

Reacting to the devastating news, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim conveyed his condolences and solidarity via a post on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). “The nation mourns the heart-wrenching and soul-wrenching tragedy,” expressed Prime Minister Ibrahim. “Condolences to all the families of the victims and prayers for strength to face this calamity.”
