Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi concluded his three-day official visit to Pakistan, during which significant strides were made toward enhancing bilateral cooperation between the two neighboring nations. The visit, marked by diplomatic meetings and agreements, concluded with the mutual commitment to expedite the finalization of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, Tehran and Islamabad reaffirmed their dedication to advancing bilateral relations across various sectors. The statement outlined a series of initiatives aimed at bolstering economic ties, including the acceleration of negotiations on the FTA and the facilitation of high-level visits and exchanges between the two countries.
Additionally, both nations agreed to intensify collaboration in areas such as anti-terrorism efforts and regional stability. Recognizing the common threat posed by terrorism, Iran and Pakistan pledged to adopt a collaborative approach to combatting this menace while upholding the principles of the UN Charter. They also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Afghanistan’s development as a peaceful and sovereign state, free from the threats of terrorism and drug trafficking.
Furthermore, the joint statement condemned incidents of Islamophobia and highlighted the need for international cooperation to address such challenges. Both countries also expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people, condemning the Israeli regime’s aggression and calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
President Raisi’s visit to Pakistan included engagements in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. During his stay, he held discussions with Pakistani counterparts, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari, aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation and addressing regional issues.
The significance of Raisi’s visit lies in the context of recent tensions in the Middle East and efforts by both Iran and Pakistan to mend relations following past conflicts. The visit underscores the importance of economic cooperation, with projects such as the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline playing a crucial role in addressing Pakistan’s energy needs.
However, challenges remain, particularly in the face of potential US sanctions against Pakistan for its involvement in the gas pipeline project. Despite these obstacles, both Iran and Pakistan are committed to advancing their partnership for mutual benefit and regional stability.
As President Raisi departed for his next destination, Sri Lanka, the groundwork laid during his visit to Pakistan sets a positive trajectory for the future of Iranian-Pakistani relations.
