Astronomers have recently made a groundbreaking discovery, unveiling a new magnetic star within the M82 galaxy. This revelation came to light following a luminous explosion observed just beyond the borders of our Milky Way galaxy, situated approximately 12 million light-years away from Earth.
Dubbed a “magnetar” due to its potent magnetic field, this celestial entity, once a radiant star, captured the attention of experts utilizing the European Space Agency (ESA) telescope.
According to a report by Live Science, the discovery, detailed in a study published in the journal Nature, was spurred by a violent release of energy, drawing attention to the newfound star within M82.
Magnetars, characterized by their formidable magnetism, are swiftly moving neutron stars that emerge as the culmination of a star’s life cycle, marking its final phase. These stellar phenomena possess unparalleled power, their luminosity estimated to surpass that of our Sun by a factor of a thousand. Remarkably, only three similar flares have been documented over the past five decades, underscoring the rarity and significance of this event.
Ashley Chrimes, a researcher affiliated with the ESA, underscored the importance of further exploration, stating, “If we can find many more, we can start to understand how often these flares happen and how these stars lose energy in the process.”
Lead author of the study, Sandro Mereghetti, expressed the team’s immediate recognition of the event’s significance, stating, “We immediately realized that this was a special alert.” Mereghetti, hailing from the National Institute for Astrophysics in Italy, emphasized the exceptional nature of the discovery, noting, “Gamma-ray bursts come from far away and anywhere in the sky, but this burst came from a bright nearby galaxy.”
Insights provided by astronomers revealed that the observed “starquake” resulted from the intense magnetic fields of the magnetar escaping the star’s rotation, disrupting its outer layers and causing fractures on its surface.
The unveiling of this magnetic star in the M82 galaxy marks a significant milestone in our understanding of celestial phenomena, shedding light on the intricate workings of the universe beyond our own galaxy.
