Unemployment soars in India under Modi’s rule

Reuters reports that approximately 83 percent of the country’s youth are currently unemployed

In the midst of ongoing elections in India, the Modi government is grappling with a significant challenge: soaring unemployment rates. According to a report by Reuters, the failure of the Modi administration to address job creation has become a central issue in the electoral landscape.

The latest data highlights the grim reality facing India’s labor force, with fear and discouragement prevalent due to the lack of employment opportunities. Reuters reports that approximately 83 percent of the country’s youth are currently unemployed, with a staggering 90 percent compelled to seek employment outside their desired field.

A recent study conducted by the International Labor Organization revealed that India’s youth unemployment crisis is among the most severe in South Asia. Shockingly, the report indicates that one in every three Indian youths is currently without a job.

While the official unemployment rate stood at a relatively modest 3.2 percent in 2022, recent figures paint a bleaker picture. According to the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy, the unemployment rate surged to 7.6 percent in March, underscoring the worsening situation.

Amidst this dire scenario, reports indicate a troubling trend of Indian citizens resorting to both legal and illegal means to secure employment. Human trafficking has seen a sharp increase, with thousands of individuals illegally migrating to countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel in search of job opportunities.

Critics have lambasted the Modi government for its perceived failure to address the unemployment crisis, accusing it of neglecting its promises to create jobs, particularly among minority communities.
