In a recent legal saga unfolding in the UK High Court, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activist Shayan Ali, accompanied by YouTuber Adil Raja and their lawyer Mahtab Anwar Aziz, made a failed attempt to besmirch the reputation of the Inter Services Agency (ISI) and Pakistan Army.
The trio found themselves in court as defendants in Brigadier (retired) Rashid Naseer’s defamation case against Adil Raja. Aziz, representing both Ali and Raja, attempted to sway the court by painting Ali as vulnerable and suffering from mental health issues due to the prolonged litigation.
Aziz went on to argue that the defamation cases lacked merit and should be considered Strategic Lawsuits against Public Participation (SLAPP), urging the court to halt proceedings. In a desperate move, Aziz made baseless allegations against Pakistan’s military, including terrorism, corruption, and censorship, without providing any evidence to substantiate these claims.
Moreover, Aziz tried to sway the court by alleging threats to his and Raja’s lives, insinuating his martial arts expertise as a form of defense. However, these tactics failed to sway the court’s decision.
In a last-ditch effort, Aziz invoked political turmoil in Pakistan, suggesting that a change in power might affect the outcome of the case. However, the court dismissed these arguments, emphasizing the lack of credibility and merit.
Despite their efforts, the judge ruled against Raja, ordering him to pay £10,000 to Brigadier Naseer by April 17, 2024. Despite Raja’s plea of financial hardship, the judge upheld the order, signaling the case’s progression to trial.
Both Raja and Ali are jointly represented by Central Law Chambers, owned by Ahmad Jawad Gondal, from Mandi Bahauddin’s Gondal family. Aziz and Gondal did not respond to inquiries.
This failed attempt highlights the importance of evidence and credibility in legal proceedings, underscoring the challenges of using unsubstantiated claims to sway court judgments.
