In a damning exposé, the BBC has shed light on the plight of Muslims in India under the Modi government, revealing a harrowing narrative of discrimination, violence, and erasure of identity.
The report paints a grim picture of the shrinking space for Indian Muslims, portraying an environment where their very existence is under threat. From hate speech to the demolition of homes and businesses, the tactics employed by the government are aimed at marginalizing and disenfranchising the Muslim population.
During Modi’s tenure, incidents of anti-Muslim sentiment have surged, creating a hostile environment where Muslims are subjected to harassment, violence, and exclusion. The report highlights instances of schoolchildren being targeted with derogatory labels, and subjected to physical abuse, forcing them to abandon their education.
Moreover, the report underscores the alarming escalation of violence against Muslims, including arbitrary arrests, torture by law enforcement, and assaults by extremist groups. The Delhi riots of 2020, which claimed the lives of more than 50 Muslims amid protests against the controversial citizenship law, serve as a stark reminder of the deep-seated animosity and systemic discrimination faced by the community.
Critics argue that the BJP government is actively suppressing Muslim representation in India, with no Muslim ministers or members of parliament in either house. This deliberate exclusion further marginalizes the Muslim community, relegating them to second-class citizenship in their own country.
