South Africa has unveiled its 15-man squad for the highly anticipated T20 World Cup, slated to commence on June 1 across the United States and the West Indies. The announcement brings into focus several intriguing selections and strategic choices as the Proteas aim to make a strong statement in the global cricketing arena.
Among the headline inclusions is the return of fast bowler Anrich Nortje, marking his comeback to T20 international cricket following a year-long hiatus due to injury setbacks. Nortje’s return injects a potent dose of pace and experience into the squad, despite his recent struggles in the Indian Premier League, where he grappled with a concerning economy rate of 13.36 runs per over across six matches.
Guiding the squad will be the capable leadership of Aiden Markram, who will have at his disposal a formidable array of seasoned hitters including Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Quinton de Kock, and Tristan Stubbs. In a strategic move, South Africa has opted for a spin-heavy bowling lineup, featuring the trio of Bjorn Fortuin, Keshav Maharaj, and Tabraiz Shamsi, with Markram himself providing a useful slow bowling option.
