Terrorist attack on Police checkpoint leaves seven policemen wounded in Punjab

In a brazen assault on Tuesday night, terrorists belonging to a banned outfit launched an attack on a checkpoint in Taunsa Sharif city of Punjab, leaving at least seven policemen wounded, including one in critical condition. This marked the second terrorist strike on the Jhangi check post within two months, thwarted by a resilient police team.

According to a spokesperson for the Punjab police, approximately 20 armed terrorists, equipped with grenades, rocket launchers, and laser-light guns, initiated the attack on the checkpoint. Despite the darkness of the night, the police force valiantly repelled the assault, engaging in a fierce gun battle that persisted for three intense hours.

The assailants, realizing their dwindling ammunition, retreated from the scene after attempting to overrun the checkpoint and capture the stationed policemen. The police team, displaying exemplary courage, managed to fend off the attackers until reinforcements, led by the DG Khan regional police officer (RPO) and district police officer (DPO), arrived at the scene.

Following the attack, the area was swiftly cordoned off, and a thorough search operation was launched to track down the fleeing terrorists. Meanwhile, the wounded officers, identified as ASI Imran, constables Muhammad Amir, Asif Zain, Rehmatullah, and Elite constables Tariq and Shahid Manzoor, were rushed to Taunsa Sharif THQ hospital for urgent medical attention. Shahid Manzoor, due to his critical condition, was subsequently transferred to Multan’s Nishtar Hospital.

Punjab Police Chief Dr. Usman Anwar commended the bravery and resilience exhibited by the police force during the confrontation, reaffirming the commitment of the Punjab police to thwart the sinister agendas of terrorists.

Expressing her condemnation of the heinous attack, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz issued directives for providing the injured security personnel with the best possible medical care, emphasizing the government’s unwavering support for law enforcement agencies in combating terrorism.
