In a recent press briefing, the United States reiterated its backing of Pakistan’s efforts in combating terrorism while emphasizing the importance of upholding human rights. Vedant Patel, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department, affirmed Washington’s support for Pakistan’s endeavors in maintaining safety and security within its borders.
“We support Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism and ensure the safety and security of its citizens in a manner that promotes the rule of law and protection of human rights,” stated Patel during the briefing held on Tuesday.
Highlighting the strategic partnership between the two nations, Patel underscored the shared interests in security matters and emphasized ongoing collaborations in counter-terrorism initiatives. This partnership includes a robust dialogue on counter-terrorism, financial support for capacity-building programs, and military engagements between the US and Pakistan.
The reaffirmation of support comes amidst a meeting between US Acting Under Secretary for Political Affairs John Bass and Acting Foreign Secretary Ambassador Rahim Hayat in Islamabad, where both parties reiterated their commitment to bolster cooperation in trade, investment, and regional security.
However, the US State Department’s recent “2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices” shed light on concerns regarding human rights abuses in Pakistan. The report pointed out the lack of substantial measures taken by Pakistan to address such abuses, including extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and harsh prison conditions.
In response to these concerns, the Pakistani Foreign Office labeled the report as “unfair” and criticized its methodology as biased and divorced from ground reality.
Meanwhile, the US State Department also addressed reports of Indian government involvement in planning the assassination of Sikh activist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Washington expressed its expectation for accountability and pledged to raise concerns with New Delhi regarding the matter.
The reports alleged the involvement of a senior Indian intelligence officer in orchestrating the assassination attempt on Pannun, a prominent figure in the Sikh community advocating for Khalistan. The plot, reportedly linked to individuals within the Indian Prime Minister’s inner circle, has drawn scrutiny from international security agencies.
