Govt establishes National Cybercrime Investigation Agency to combat rising cyber threats

In a proactive move to address the escalating challenge of cybercrimes, the federal government has announced the establishment of the National Cybercrime Investigation Agency (NCIA), marking a significant shift from the previous FIA Cybercrime Wing.

The decision to create NCIA comes amidst a surge in cyber threats, including hacking, online fraud, and digital terrorism, which have become increasingly sophisticated and pervasive. With the aim of strengthening the country’s cybersecurity framework, NCIA will inherit and expand upon the responsibilities previously held by the FIA Cybercrime Wing.

A formal notification has been issued by the government, signaling the transition to NCIA, which will now operate under the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication. This new agency is entrusted with the crucial task of investigating and prosecuting cybercrimes, with a mandate that encompasses a wide range of online offenses.

To facilitate a smooth transition, personnel and resources from the FIA Cybercrime Wing have been transferred to NCIA, ensuring continuity in ongoing investigations and cases. Additionally, the government has introduced comprehensive rules and regulations to govern the operations of NCIA, granting it the necessary authority to effectively combat cybercriminal activities.

The establishment of NCIA reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting citizens from the growing threats posed by cybercrimes. By consolidating efforts and resources under a unified agency, the government aims to bolster cybersecurity initiatives nationwide, safeguarding digital infrastructure and promoting online safety for all citizens.
