As the world observes World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd, the focus this year is on the vital role of journalism amidst the global environmental crisis. Under the theme “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the environmental crisis”, attention is drawn to the importance of journalistic freedom of expression in addressing pressing environmental issues.
President Zardari’s Message:
In light of this occasion, President Asif Ali Zardari has underscored the need for measures to ensure the safety and security of journalists. Stressing the constitutional guarantee of press freedom in Pakistan, President Zardari emphasized the responsibility of media to adhere to ethical standards while reporting on national interests. He further urged the creation of an environment free from intimidation, enabling journalists to express opinions freely.
Recognizing the media’s contribution to democratic values and raising awareness on social and economic issues, including climate change, President Zardari expressed hope for continued constructive engagement by the media on global concerns. He highlighted the importance of World Press Freedom Day as a moment for reflection on the state of press freedom and the creation of a safe working environment for journalists.

PM Sharif’s message:
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif pledged the government’s commitment to uplift the media industry and address its challenges. Recognizing the sacrifices made by journalists, Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the importance of press freedom as a cornerstone of democracy and civil rights.
Highlighting the government’s efforts to improve press freedom, Prime Minister Sharif noted Pakistan’s advancement in the World Press Freedom Index during his tenure. He recalled measures taken by the government, including legislation for media protection and financial support for media workers.
As World Press Freedom Day is commemorated globally, the messages from President Zardari and Prime Minister Sharif underscore the importance of ensuring a free and secure environment for journalists, as well as the critical role of media in addressing contemporary challenges.
