Google pays tribute to India’s women wrestling pioneer, Hamida Banu

In a gesture celebrating trailblazing athleticism and resilience, Google honored Hamida Banu, hailed as India’s first female wrestler, on Saturday. The tech giant adorned its homepage with a special logo commemorating Banu’s groundbreaking contributions to the sport, particularly during an era dominated by men in the 1940s and 1950s.

Born in the early 1900s in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, Banu emerged from a family deeply entrenched in wrestling culture. Her remarkable journey to prominence reached its zenith in 1954 when she achieved global recognition by defeating the renowned wrestler Baba Pahalwan in a remarkable one minute and 34 seconds match, prompting Pahalwan to withdraw from professional wrestling.

Banu’s legacy extends far beyond this iconic victory. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, she clinched victory in over 300 competitions, defying societal norms that often discouraged women’s participation in sports. In a bold move challenging gender norms, Banu publicly offered her hand in marriage to any male wrestler who could defeat her in the ring, further solidifying her status as a symbol of women’s empowerment.

Her prowess transcended national borders, with Banu securing a decisive victory over Russian wrestler Vera Chistilin in under two minutes during international competition.

Dubbed the “Amazon of Aligarh,” Banu’s rigorous training regimen, dietary discipline, and string of victories captured the imagination of both local and international audiences. Despite facing pervasive societal resistance, Banu fearlessly pursued her passion for wrestling, inspiring countless individuals to challenge entrenched gender stereotypes.

Divya Negi, the artist behind the commemorative Google Doodle, emphasized Banu’s indomitable spirit in the face of conservative societal norms. Reflecting on Banu’s enduring legacy, Negi remarked that her defiance against prevailing conventions serves as a powerful source of inspiration for those striving to break free from the constraints of societal expectations.

Hamida Banu’s remarkable journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of perseverance and determination, leaving an indelible mark on India’s sporting landscape and inspiring generations to come.
