In a tragic turn of events, the death toll from floods in Kenya has surged to 228, according to reports from international media sources. The Ministry of Interior of Kenya confirmed this alarming figure, revealing a substantial increase from the initial count of 179 casualties.
The floods wreaked havoc across various regions of Kenya, with one of the most devastating incidents occurring at the iconic Masai Mara Safari Park in western Kenya. Here, the overflowing Telek River swept away groups of tourists staying in hotels, compounding the already dire situation.
In another harrowing incident, a landslide near Mai Mahio, a village in the country’s central region, claimed the lives of 46 individuals. The Ministry of Interior issued a statement warning of the heightened risk of landslides and mudslides, particularly in mountainous areas, with projections indicating a further deterioration in low-lying and coastal regions.
The devastation caused by months of flooding in Kenya is profound, with countless homes, roads, and bridges destroyed, leaving more than 210,000 people displaced. Furthermore, the impact of the relentless rains has extended beyond Kenya’s borders, affecting neighboring East African countries.
In Tanzania, floods and landslides have resulted in the loss of 155 lives, while Uganda and Burundi have also reported fatalities and significant damage due to the adverse weather conditions.
As East Africa grapples with the aftermath of these calamitous events, efforts to provide relief and support to affected communities are underway amidst the urgent need for assistance and resources.
