In a significant development on Monday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced the appointment of Sheikh Waqas Akram as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). This decision comes after careful deliberations within the party’s political committee.
Sources within PTI reveal that the party founder, Imran Khan, proposed the names of Hammad Raza and Sheikh Waqas Akram for the chairmanship of PAC, following the withdrawal of Sher Afzal Marwat from the contention. Imran Khan’s directive to consult with the political committee on this matter led to the finalization of Sheikh Waqas Akram’s name with a majority vote.
The appointment of Sheikh Waqas Akram has also garnered support from the Sunni Ittehad Council, which has proposed his name for the position.
This announcement follows PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan’s earlier statement on April 30, confirming Sher Afzal Marwat as the nominee for the PAC Chairman position. Marwat, however, expressed his willingness to step down if any of his party colleagues were nominated for the post, particularly opposing the nomination of Sunni Ittehad Council’s Hamid Raza.
In light of these developments, Sheikh Waqas Akram’s nomination marks a resolution to the internal dispute within PTI regarding the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee. With this decision, PTI aims to strengthen its position and effectively carry out its oversight responsibilities.
