The Punjab Health Department has confirmed the first case of the deadly Congo virus in the province for the year 2024. Tragically, the virus claimed the life of a 44-year-old man identified as Imran, a resident of Attock.
The emergence of this case marks a concerning trend, with data from the provincial health department revealing that over the past four years, Punjab has witnessed a total of 16 reported cases of the Congo virus, resulting in six fatalities.
Imran’s case represents the fourth instance of the Congo virus reported in Punjab, and sadly, the first resulting in death this year.
The Punjab Health Department has issued a stark warning about the dangers posed by the Congo virus, emphasizing its capacity for transmission from animals to humans. This underscores the urgent need for public awareness and preventive measures to curb the spread of the disease.
Prior to Imran’s case, Punjab had experienced 10 reported cases of the Congo virus in 2020, resulting in one fatality. The situation escalated in 2022, with three deaths reported among a total of 10 cases. In 2023, the province saw five confirmed cases, with three fatalities.
