In a stern address to the press, General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry emphasized the imperative of holding accountable those responsible for the May 9 riots. Speaking from Rawalpindi, he asserted that adherence to the Constitution and the country’s laws is paramount to maintain faith in Pakistan’s justice system.
General Chaudhry underscored the gravity of the issue, stating that the aftermath of the riots extends beyond the Pakistan Army to affect the entire nation. Moreover, he pointed to “irrefutable evidence” implicating the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in utilizing Afghanistan as a base for attacks against Pakistan.
While reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to counter-terrorism efforts, the military spokesperson vowed relentless pursuit against terrorist elements. He emphasized the military’s dedication to preserving law and order within the country, highlighting the Army Chief’s unequivocal stance against terrorism.
Addressing the issue of Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan, General Chaudhry acknowledged the nation’s humanitarian role in hosting millions of Afghan citizens. However, he noted the challenges posed by the deteriorating law and order situation, attributing some of the unrest to Afghan militants.
The General further disclosed that more than half a million Afghan refugees have been repatriated, yet emphasized that the presence of millions of Afghans continues to strain Pakistan’s resources. Despite this, he assured that the military remains steadfast in safeguarding the nation against external threats and internal disturbances, particularly in regions like Balochistan.
In conclusion, General Chaudhry reiterated the military’s resolve to combat terrorism while upholding the rule of law and justice, asserting that no leniency would be shown towards those who disrupt peace and stability within Pakistan.
