Azlan Shah Hockey Cup: Pakistan to lock horns with Japan in final match today

In a culmination of skill and strategy, Pakistan and Japan are poised to vie for the coveted title in the final match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2024, taking place in Ipoh, Malaysia today.

Throughout the tournament, both teams have displayed remarkable prowess, remaining undefeated in their respective matches. Japan, securing the top spot on the points table with 13 points, clinched victory in four matches and drew one. Pakistan closely follows in second place with 11 points, boasting three wins and two draws, including a recent standoff against New Zealand on Friday.

Scheduled to commence at 5:30 pm local time, the high-stakes final promises an intense battle for supremacy, set to broadcast live on Geo Super.

Ahead of the much-anticipated showdown, Pakistani forward Abdul Hannan Shahid shed light on the formidable challenge posed by Japan’s defensive strategies. With Japan conceding a mere four goals, the lowest in the tournament thus far, Shahid emphasized the opponent’s resilience on the field.

“Japan’s defensive line is extremely solid,” Shahid remarked. “While they may not exhibit the same level of creativity in their attacks, they capitalize effectively on their opponents’ mistakes.”

Acknowledging Pakistan’s offensive prowess tempered by defensive vulnerabilities, Shahid expressed the team’s resolve to address shortcomings in their gameplay.

Meanwhile, the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup serves as a morale booster for the Pakistani squad, especially considering their upcoming participation in the FIH Nations Cup in Gniezno, Poland, slated from May 31 to June 9. Notably, victory in the Nations Cup presents the opportunity to compete in the prestigious FIH Hockey Pro League for the 2024-25 season.

In a show of support and recognition, Prime Minister Youth Programme Chairman Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan confirmed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s commitment to reward the players in the event of victory.

“The promotion of sports in Pakistan remains a top priority for the Prime Minister,” emphasized Mashhood.

In parallel matches, Canada is set to clash with Korea for the 5th/6th place position at 1:00 pm, while Malaysia and New Zealand will contend for the 3rd/4th position at 3:15 pm.
