Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz is set to undergo medical tests following a bout of “high temperature and joint pain,” as reported by the state news agency SPA.
This marks the second time in a month that the 88-year-old monarch will be examined at the royal clinics at Al Salam Palace in Jeddah. His last medical visit was in April for routine checkups, according to state television.
King Salman, who has ruled the world’s leading oil exporter since 2015, ascended to the throne after serving as crown prince and deputy premier for over two-and-a-half years. Despite his son’s significant role in daily governance, King Salman’s health remains a topic of public interest.
The king’s current health issue involves a high temperature and joint pain, prompting his medical team to conduct further tests to diagnose and ensure his well-being. The Royal Court’s April disclosure mentioned his admission to King Faisal Specialist Hospital for routine examinations, from which he was discharged the same day.
Prior to this, King Salman was hospitalized in May 2022 for a colonoscopy and remained in the hospital for over a week for additional tests and rest, SPA reported. In 2020, he underwent surgery to remove his gall bladder, and in March 2022, he was admitted to the hospital to change his pacemaker’s battery and for other successful medical tests.
Speculation about King Salman’s health has been a recurring issue, with Riyadh dismissing rumors in 2017 that he was planning to abdicate in favor of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has been the de facto ruler since 2017.
King Salman’s tenure as king has been characterized by significant social and economic reforms spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed. These reforms aim to prepare Saudi Arabia for a future less dependent on oil, amid efforts to modernize the kingdom. The Crown Prince has also been known for a stringent crackdown on dissent, which analysts believe has helped consolidate his power.
King Salman previously served as the governor of Riyadh and as the defense minister, playing pivotal roles in the country’s administration for decades before becoming king.
