Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to seek a third term in office despite his party’s failure to secure a landslide victory in the recently concluded general elections. The elections, which spanned six weeks from April 19 to June 1, culminated in a mixed outcome for Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Election Commission of India announced the results for all 543 Lok Sabha seats, revealing that the BJP won 240 constituencies. This is a significant number, yet it falls short of the 272 seats required for a majority. Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress (INC) secured 99 seats, marking a notable increase from their previous tally.
Despite the BJP’s shortfall, Modi is set to return for a third term as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which collectively won 293 seats—enough to form the government. This tally includes contributions from various regional allies, whose political support remains crucial for Modi’s continued governance.
The results triggered a negative reaction in financial markets, with stocks plummeting on Tuesday. Investors expressed concern over the BJP’s reliance on regional parties with fluctuating political allegiances, which could lead to instability in governance.
In contrast, the opposition INDIA alliance, led by Rahul Gandhi’s Congress party, performed better than expected, winning 230 seats in total. The Congress party alone doubled its previous count, securing 99 seats, a development likely to bolster Gandhi’s leadership within the coalition.
Modi addressed a gathering of enthusiastic BJP supporters at the party headquarters on Tuesday evening. “The blessings of the people for the third time after 10 years boosts our morale, gives new strength,” he declared, reaffirming his commitment to serve with renewed vigor in his upcoming term.
Both the BJP-led NDA and the opposition INDIA alliance are scheduled to hold meetings to strategize their next moves. While the opposition coalition explores potential pathways to influence governance, their efforts may be hindered by the firm allegiance of two major BJP allies who have reiterated their support for Modi.
As the political landscape settles, all eyes remain on Modi’s efforts to navigate this period of coalition politics and maintain stability in India’s government.
