Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday extended his congratulations to Narendra Modi on the latter’s inauguration as India’s Prime Minister for a third consecutive term.
Taking to his personal account on X, formerly known as Twitter, PM Sharif wrote: “Felicitations to @narendramodi on taking oath as the Prime Minister of India.”
Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, which took place on Sunday, was a landmark event, marking his third term in office. This tenure sees him joining the ranks of only one other Indian leader, Jawaharlal Nehru, in achieving three consecutive terms as Prime Minister.
The ceremony was held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the presidential palace in New Delhi, and was administered by President Droupadi Murmu. The event was attended by a host of dignitaries, including leaders from seven regional countries, Bollywood celebrities, and prominent industrialists.
Modi, 73, ascended to his third term under challenging circumstances. His Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured the victory with the backing of 14 regional parties within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), contrasting his previous two terms, where the BJP had a clear majority. This shift is expected to test Modi’s capacity to maintain policy stability in India, the world’s most populous nation.
Despite the electoral win, the results fell short of predictions. Pre-election surveys and exit polls had anticipated that the BJP would gain more seats than it did in the 2019 elections, making this outcome a notable setback for Modi.
As Modi begins his new term, observers and analysts alike are keenly watching how he navigates the political landscape with a coalition-led government, a situation that presents both new challenges and opportunities for India’s future.
