In a significant diplomatic move, Armenia formally recognized Palestine as a state on Friday morning, according to the Russian TASS news agency. The announcement, confirmed by Armenia’s foreign affairs ministry, marks a pivotal moment in the country’s foreign policy stance toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Following the recognition, Israel’s foreign affairs ministry swiftly responded by summoning the Armenian ambassador to Israel for what was described as a “stern reprimand.”
“Always being a supporter of a two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Armenia made the decision to recognize the independent state of Palestine,” stated Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan in a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
The recognition comes amid escalating violence and a dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which have dominated international political discussions. Armenia has strongly condemned the targeting of civilian infrastructure, acts of violence against civilians, and the taking of hostages during armed conflicts, aligning itself with global calls for the unconditional release of all civilian hostages.
In alignment with its recent stance, Armenia has supported United Nations General Assembly resolutions advocating for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The Armenian government has reiterated its commitment to fostering peace and stability in the Middle East, emphasizing the importance of lasting reconciliation between Jewish and Palestinian communities.
“On various international platforms, our position has consistently been in favour of a peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue, and we support the ‘two-state’ solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We are convinced that this is the only way to ensure that both Palestinians and Israelis can fulfil their legitimate aspirations,” added Kostanyan.
By recognizing the State of Palestine, Armenia reaffirms its dedication to international law and the principles of equality, sovereignty, and peaceful coexistence. This move underscores Armenia’s ongoing commitment to promoting a diplomatic resolution to one of the most enduring and contentious conflicts in modern history.
