In a thrilling Super 8 match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, the West Indies showcased their prowess by defeating the United States by nine wickets at the Kensington Oval on Saturday. The emphatic victory not only lifted the spirits of the home crowd but also significantly boosted the West Indies’ net run rate, edging them closer to a semi-final spot.
Chasing a target of 129 runs set by the USA, the West Indies cruised to victory in just 10.5 overs. The standout performance came from Shai Hope, who played an unbeaten knock of 82 runs off 39 balls, including four boundaries and eight towering sixes. Nicholas Pooran complemented Hope’s innings with an explosive 27 runs off 12 balls, featuring three sixes and a four.
The match began with the West Indies winning the toss and opting to bowl first. Their decision was vindicated by a clinical bowling display that saw the USA being bowled out for 128 in 19.5 overs. Roston Chase was the star with the ball, achieving career-best figures of 3-19 in his four overs, while Andre Russell also impressed with 3-31 in 3.5 overs.
Reflecting on his performance and being named Player of the Match, Chase expressed his joy, saying, “To achieve career-best figures at home, surrounded by my parents and friends, is an exhilarating experience. If we don’t get too many wickets in the powerplay, it will be on the spinners to come back and pull the game back.” He further emphasized the team’s resolve, stating, “It is our destiny and our goal to win the World Cup. So, anyone we play, we have to beat to achieve that.”
