How much PCB pays Pakistani players?

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has unveiled the details of players’ remuneration under their central contracts, according to a report by The News on Monday. This disclosure comes in the wake of the national team’s disappointing early exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, prompting the board to contemplate adjustments to the players’ central contracts.

In a move reflecting accountability, some players are expected to face demotions due to subpar performances, while others might lose their contracts altogether. The PCB’s current central contract structure outlines monthly salaries across four categories:

– Category A: Players like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi earn Rs4.5 million per month.
– Category B: Includes Shadab Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah, who receive Rs3 million per month.
– Category C: Comprises players such as Imad Wasim, with salaries ranging from Rs750,000 to Rs1.5 million per month.
– Category D: Matches Category C in pay, featuring players like Iftikhar Ahmed, Hasan Ali, and Saim Ayub.

These figures represent only the base salaries. Players also earn additional income through match fees, win bonuses across Test, ODI, and T20I formats, and sponsorship deals.

The current three-year contracts were established last year and took effect from July 1, 2023, after negotiations spearheaded by former PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf, who faced pressure from players demanding higher remuneration, sources told Geo News.

In light of the team’s recent performance, key players like skipper Babar Azam and wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan risk losing their Category A status. However, sources indicate that while reassignments may occur, the overall salary pool for national cricketers will not decrease.

There are concerns that demoted players might reject their central contracts, opting instead to play independently without contractual restrictions. The PCB is awaiting a crucial report from head coach Gary Kirsten, which will significantly influence forthcoming decisions. Additionally, a review of senior manager Wahab Riaz’s report will precede any final determinations regarding contract modifications.
